Hundreds show up for “Lost” casting. I audition, sort of.
Hundreds show up for “Lost” casting. I audition, sort of.
Call it the “Weird Little TV Show that Could.” A castaway
drama launched four years ago with modest expectations that blew up into an
Emmy-winning global phenomenon. Of course I’m referring to the Hawaii-filmed ABC hit series, Lost.
I’m not one to camp out overnight at Kualoa Ranch for a glimpse of Jack or Locke or even Hurley. But I
had a change of heart last week when I heard about an open casting call for
extras for the show’s ...

Maui sea turtles get a birthday party, weeklong fest

The folks at the Maui Ocean Center aim to change that on Aug. 26 when they throw a birthday bash for their six Hawaiian green sea turtles—Nohea, Leilani, Maluhia, Kuuipo, Kainalu and Alamea. Between 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day, aquarium visitors will be able to wish the turtles “Hauoli la hanau!” (Hawaiian for “Happy birthday!”).
The honu (Hawaiian for “tu...

Exploring the Pacific Aviation Museum at Pearl Harbor
For our September/October 2008 issue of HAWAII, photographer David Croxford and I visited the Pacific Aviation Museum on Pearl Harbor’s Ford Island.
The museum is the only Pearl Harbor historic site to focus exclusively on the American military’s air conflicts.
Being on Ford Island was bit of a surreal experience. You can’t just casually drive onto the island. You’re taken by a museum bus. Clouds of dust stirred up furiously in the wind as we were taken across the island. Bikers rode along the defunct ...

Char’s Chopsticks: Uncle Bobo’s Smoked BBQ
I’ve been writing a lot about the shrimp meals I’ve had, but maybe these crustaceans aren’t on your list of favorite foods.

It's still Obama-rama in Hawaii
