Vacationers Travel Guide
So your planning a trip to paradise, the best way to
start is to do some research. We've gathered information from different
resources to help make your trip as enjoyable and safe
as possible. This is a good place to find "things to do"
on your visit.
Our main categories are - "Hiking"
"Surfing" "Fishing" "Snorkeling/SCUBA" "Places you must
see", but we will start with what
to pack.
What to
Bring:
Personally I've never found the need to wear anything
else but a short sleeve shirt and shorts. The
temperature is very constant here. In the winter months
you can expect temperatures around 78°f during the
day and getting down to around 68°f in the
evening/night. If your staying somewhere that is in the
higher elevation like Makaha Valley towers the lows at
night can reach into the 50s. Summer temps are 5°
warmer, usually 75° to 85° maybe getting to 90°.
Many hiking trails are in the higher elevations, many
are along mountain ridges. For hikes up there you should
bring long pants and a long sleeve shirt or a light
jacket. I have more information on that in the hiking
article.
Hiking:
There are many beautiful places to hike on all islands
but here we will mainly talk about Oahu. Most of the
trails are in higher elevations so you will want to
bring warmer clothes. Many of these trails are also in
very dense rain forests so you might want a water proof
light jacket. Also you need to keep in mind that your
closer to the sun here, so sun block is very important,
at a minimum you should have a block that's spf15, I
recommend spf30. And one more thing, make sure you have
a cell phone and that it's charged before you go. Every
year people get lost, sometimes with tragic endings. If
you don't have a cell phone, you can get a 2-way radio
with a 7 mile range from many stores, I know Radio Shack
has them and there inexpensive. Most important, if
you can, let someone know where your hiking and when you
plan to return. (We will be adding a list of trails and
information on them soon) |

Surfing
(for the beginner):
Do you plan on surfing while on your Hawaiian
vacation? Surfing can be dangerous, even deadly if you
don't know what your doing.
One thing to remember, this is the ocean, there are
sharks, there is no way around that.
I haven't surfed the south shores, like Waikiki, mainly because the waves
aren't big enough, but also because it looked to tough
to get out in the surf. When you enter the ocean from
the sandy beach you enter a "swim area" that goes out
about 50 yards, then it gets very shallow and rocky.
From the shore it looks like you have to get through 20
or 30 yards of rocks and coral. So when you surf you
surf toward the rocks, you have to be careful not to run
into them.
The north shore is most popular, but also the most crowded.
The west shore
has some very good surfing up and down, but it to
is crowded.
Things to know while surfing. courtesy, patients and kindness.
First, remember your a visitor, most of the
people out there are regulars so give them the right of
way.
Second, when you go out into the surf, make sure
you stay way clear of the area thats being surfed. Once
your out then head toward the surf spot, do
not head into the way of the people surfing.
Third, do not share a wave with someone. When you
notice someone has a wave, back off. You'll get your
turn.
Fourth, Notice what way the surfers are going
after they are done with a wave and exit the same way.
For your own safety don't stay in the surf path, a
runaway board could give you big trouble.
